Frequently asked questions

Quick answers about renaming files with folder names on Windows.

How do I rename multiple files using their parent folder name?

Open RenameFromFolders, choose the top folder, add a Parent folder part to the recipe, check the before-and-after preview, and confirm. The same recipe can cover files in nested subfolders.

How do I add a folder name to a filename without moving the file?

Build a name from a folder part, optional separator text and the original filename. Files stay in their existing folders; only their names change.

How do I rename files to the folder name in Windows 11?

Open RenameFromFolders, drop the folder on the window, add a Parent folder part (and the original file name if you want it), check the preview and press Rename. File Explorer cannot build names from folders on its own.

How do I add the parent folder name to every file name?

Add a Parent folder part before or after the Original filename part. Use a Text part for a separator such as ' - '. The preview shows the result for every file.

Does it rename files inside subfolders?

Yes. Choose the top folder and every file inside it and its subfolders is included. Files stay in their own folders.

Will it overwrite existing files?

No. If a new name is already used, or two files would get the same name, those files are shown as conflicts and skipped.

Can I undo a bulk rename?

Yes, right after renaming or later from History. Each file is checked before it is restored; missing, changed or blocked files are left alone and listed in a report.

Can I use only part of a folder name?

Yes. Keep the text before or after a separator (for example the number in '0555 - John Wick'), trim spaces, or change the case.

Does it work offline? Does it collect data?

It works fully offline. The app has no network access, accounts or tracking. Its history and logs stay on your PC.

Which versions of Windows are supported?

Windows 10 (version 1809 or later) and Windows 11, on 64-bit PCs.

How many files can it handle?

It is designed for large folders; the preview was benchmarked with 300,000 files. Renaming speed depends on your disk.

Does a counter restart in each folder?

No. A counter numbers the selected files in order of their path across the whole selection.
